How have you engaged with CAFIID and how has it supported your professional journey and growth?
I moved to Canada in 2021 from Türkiye and joined Rally Assets in 2023. I was eagerly looking for opportunities to get to know more people in the impact investing space in Canada. In one of the monthly newsletters of CAFIID, I saw a volunteering opportunity to join the Membership Engagement Committee (MEC). My journey at CAFIID started with this and expanded over time. At MEC, I am responsible for organizing in-person CAFIIDConnects events in Toronto and supporting the planning of in-person events in other cities. In 2024, I organized three in-person events in Toronto and had the opportunity to bring inspiring impact professionals together. In 2024, I also participated in the Mentorship program of CAFIID as a mentee. Currently, I am also a member of IMM CoP in addition to MEC.
Can you share a meaningful connection or key lesson learned through CAFIID?
The key lesson I have learnt from CAFIID members is staying curious about other people’s work and perspectives. CAFIID connects very different types of organizations from around the world. Each member organization and individual member brings a new perspective and specialization. For instance, the strategic priorities of a blended finance partnership are different from those of a first-time fund manager aiming to achieve its first close. This diversity in practices, stages, and goals is something that I celebrate and cherish.
In terms of connections I built through CAFIID, I have been very lucky! A long-time CAFIID volunteer Rubelyn Alcantara was my mentor in 2024. I’m inspired by her experience, knowledge and eagerness to do more. Also, through in-person CAFIID events and CAFIID get-togethers in major sector events like PRI in Person in Toronto in 2024, I’ve had many opportunities to meet new impact professionals.
What motivates you to stay involved with CAFIID?
Impact investing plays a sizeable role in systems change by not only financing impactful ideas but also changing the way we approach capital allocation and investment decision-making. This system-level thinking requires participants to get to know and learn from each other and collaborate. The feeling of speaking the same ‘impact language’ with other CAFIID members keeps me optimistic and motivated. It is always the people we are building things together with that matters.
What advice would you give others to support their professional growth in impact investing?
Similar to staying curious about people, we also need to keep learning and unlearning the concepts, frameworks. We need to embrace new ways of thinking to grow the impact investing space and grow with it. Too much change can be tiresome. In these moments, I like to remind myself to stay focused on what we have achieved so far. We all need to have a grounded optimism to be able to continue to build a better future.
