Meet a member: Goparity Canada

What impact has your recent work led to that you are most proud of?
We kicked off 2025 by closing a project that is very close to our hearts. In early January, we completed our raise for Renewable Energy Communities II, a $135,000 loan for Barkley Project Group (Barkley). This is Barkley’s fourth project with Goparity, and over the last two years, our community has lent the Nanaimo-based organization $435,000 through thousands of investors. Renewable Energy Communities II was financed by a combination of institutional, accredited, and non-accredited investors, with the average investment amount around $1680- one of the highest average investments we’ve seen on our platform for any project to date.

What challenges and barriers are you working on addressing?
At Goparity Canada, we’re tackling some of the most persistent barriers that prevent Canadians from participating in impact investing. The first obstacle we identified was accessibility. Traditional investment models often require high minimum contributions, making them out of reach for many individuals. We solved this by introducing a crowdlending model with a minimum investment amount of just $10, empowering Canadians from all walks of life to participate in creating meaningful change.

Another challenge is the complexity of navigating Canada’s regulatory environment. To address this, we worked closely with securities regulators to design an efficient and compliant platform that balances accessibility with investor protection. This effort has allowed us to bring a trusted and effective impact finance model to Canadians.

But perhaps the most significant barrier we’re addressing is awareness. Impact investing is still far from mainstream in Canada, and many people simply don’t know where to start or why it matters. That’s why education is at the heart of everything we do. Through workshops, webinars, and accessible content, we’re equipping Canadians with the knowledge they need to understand how their investments can align with their values. By breaking down these barriers one by one, we’re building a movement where everyone—regardless of age, income, or experience—can be part of shaping a more sustainable future.
