What impact has your recent work led to that you are most proud of?
We kicked off 2025 by closing a project that is very close to our hearts. In early January, we completed our raise for Renewable Energy Communities II, a $135,000 loan for Barkley Project Group (Barkley). This is Barkley’s fourth project with Goparity, and over the last two years, our community has lent the Nanaimo-based organization $435,000 through thousands of investors. Renewable Energy Communities II was financed by a combination of institutional, accredited, and non-accredited investors, with the average investment amount around $1680- one of the highest average investments we’ve seen on our platform for any project to date.

At Goparity, we use a crowdlending model to make this type of impact investing accessible to all. In Renewable Energy Communities II, we saw investors between the ages of 21 and 78 come together to support the initiative. Barkley happens to be one of those organizations where the impact is so powerful that you can’t help but fall in love with their story and the work that they’re doing.
Barkley is a Renewable Energy developer for remote Indigenous communities on the West coast of Canada, with a focus on Indigenous ownership over clean energy solutions.
The financing they’ve received from the Goparity community has alleviated their cash flow constraints, allowing them to expand their operations and take on new projects. To date, Barkley has supported the implementation of over 150 projects, advancing the deployment of hydro, solar, wind, biomass, tidal, and geothermal energy infrastructure. Through these initiatives, they've supported over 65 Indigenous communities to make significant environmental strides, reducing over 1675 tons of CO2 emissions.
What challenges and barriers are you working on addressing?
At Goparity Canada, we’re tackling some of the most persistent barriers that prevent Canadians from participating in impact investing. The first obstacle we identified was accessibility. Traditional investment models often require high minimum contributions, making them out of reach for many individuals. We solved this by introducing a crowdlending model with a minimum investment amount of just $10, empowering Canadians from all walks of life to participate in creating meaningful change.
Another challenge is the complexity of navigating Canada’s regulatory environment. To address this, we worked closely with securities regulators to design an efficient and compliant platform that balances accessibility with investor protection. This effort has allowed us to bring a trusted and effective impact finance model to Canadians.
But perhaps the most significant barrier we’re addressing is awareness. Impact investing is still far from mainstream in Canada, and many people simply don’t know where to start or why it matters. That’s why education is at the heart of everything we do. Through workshops, webinars, and accessible content, we’re equipping Canadians with the knowledge they need to understand how their investments can align with their values. By breaking down these barriers one by one, we’re building a movement where everyone—regardless of age, income, or experience—can be part of shaping a more sustainable future.

What are you looking forward to in the coming months?
-
I’m [Emily Mercy] personally looking forward to expanding Goparity into new provinces. Currently, Goparity is licensed in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Nova Scotia, representing about 73% of the Canadian population. Following our launch in Alberta last October, we aim to bring projects and investment opportunities to regions across the country. This year, we will focus on developing impact investing in rural communities. We want to demonstrate that impact investing can work for areas that have been left behind.
We are also growing our team by hiring a Director of Investor Relations. This role will connect our investor community with our operations. The licensed dealing representative will improve our investor experience and ensure our community feels supported in their impact investing journey.
These developments are steps towards our goal of making sustainable finance accessible to Canadians, regardless of location or background. As we expand and strengthen our team, we are building a movement that can transform how Canadians invest in their future and the planet's well-being.
